Make yourself a dress for under $9? update

Make yourself a dress for under $9.00- can it be done? YES!! In this tough economy - everyone is cutting back on their finances/spending and buying yourself a custom fitted dress may just does not sound practical?

Well it is!

Last week while looking thru the new fabric at Joann's- I found this beautiful black and white fabric to make a halter top dress.

I had a 50% off coupon and purchased one yard of the fabric for under $9.00. ( To determine how much fabric you will need- measure your body at your widest point and add 2 inches- that it is amount of fabric to buy) The width you buy is the distance around your body - the preset measurements of the fabric set the length. I then began the transformation.

I cut 2 inches across the complete bottom. I then folded the cut off section in half and cut it to get two long rectangle pieces. Put right sides together and sewed along all 3 sides leaving open the end. Then turn the fabric right side out and iron. Do this for both pieces that you cut to make the straps.

Next take the dress body and place the right sides of the fabric together and sew along the long open edge to make the dress body.

Iron your seams open . Next form the hem of the dress by folding up the bottom hem 1/4" and then 1/4" again and iron. Sew an 1/8" hem all along the bottom to form the hem.
Next try on the dress and see how it is fitting. Now is when you can make the dress custom fit to your figure- is it too wide in the bust or hips?

Pin the places where it is too big and pin thru both layers to get the dress to fit exactly how you want.
Also at this point- figure out where you will want the straps. Pin them in place also .

Remove the dress and sew the straps on ( sew edge of strap on inside

of bust top) and any adjustments that you pinned on the dress.

Try on and see how it looks !

You should now have a great fitting dress that can be worn any time of year. Pair it up with a t shirt, some tight/or leggings, and tall boots for the winter or just wear with a cami and flip flops for the summer!

A year round dress for less than $9.00- now you can't beat that!!

You do realize that only works if your largest measurement around is smaller than the width of the fabric! In my case I'd have to buy double the length wanted just to get it around me--and would then have quite a bit left over for what? Quilting? I think I'll stick with my patterns. But for you skinny folk, it's great!
